It’s been awhile since our last blog post, and for that, I do apologize. Everything is happening so fast, we’re busy, and it’s just seemed non-stop. We try to make time for ourselves also, but that isn’t helping the poor little neglected blog here either.

With that said, and with Karie’s prior plans of a well deserved massage and shopping trip, I was determined to get something up here this evening. Of course, I just drew a blank on what to write about as I typically like to plan these things out. Recent renovations? The new alignment system? Projects of late? All the various repairs we’ve done? The awesome customers we have? All very, very cool – but they just didn’t seem like the appropriate topic this evening as I hadn’t had time to put a lot of thought into it. So, I looked at the common denominator for all, and kept coming back to one thing – this is all only possible because of where we’ve landed, Punta Gorda.

Now, I could write a book on the things I’ve grown to love so much about this beautiful little city – I won’t bore you with that, you need to experience it yourself one day. This “shout out” post is for some very dear friends of ours, Dirk and Angela. You see, we met them back in 2010 while living in North Carolina. Dirk was into Volkswagens, as I was, and we hit it off pretty quickly. Soon after, we both got into boating, and we all spent many a weekend and vacation together on the water. But, Dirk and I also share a common trait of over-researching everything to the point of insanity, whether that be a blessing (like the $1200 smoker I just bought), or a curse (like the weeks of research spent ensuring I got the absolute best I could for what I could feasibly budget spending).

Carrying on then. Once into boating, every winter was spent grumbling about winter and wishing for year round boating. Probably sometime in 2014 or so, we both started talking about realistically moving to south Florida one day. I was convinced I’d be there first, but never put any hard, serious thought into it. I’m not sure Dirk did either, for awhile – but that definitely did change. He began researching incessantly, and we often chatted about the different places he’d found, pros and cons, cost of living, amenities, etc… Long story short – in 2017 he scored a job transfer down, and after years of research, he settled on Punta Gorda.

Now. I’d like to think that had I been doing all the typical research and googling that I do, I would’ve ended up in the same spot. There’s a good chance I would. But, there again, I had never in my life even heard of Punta Gorda. Before the realtor.com article last month, I’m not sure PG was ever really known for anything. It was like SWFL’s best kept secret. Would I have found it? We’ll never know. But Dirk did, and we visited often, and we fell in love. Now that we’ve lived here for 3 months, we feel at home already. Every time we walk downtown, or visit one of the many events happening every weekend, or we sit down at the Celtic Ray. Every time we watch a sunset at the Tiki Bar, or bicycle the Harborwalk, or just ride our jet-skis out to Cayo Costa. We’re reminded every single day of how much we love this city, and of how we found it. For that, we can probably never thank our friends Dirk and Angela enough for taking a leap of faith and landing here and making it home, which ultimately led us to do the same.

And with all that said, I’ve had a corned beef brisket on my new smoker for quite a long time now, and I’m gonna go home and take care of that. I’d invite my dear friends over to share, but Dirk is probably researching the next best thing, and I certainly don’t want to interrupt that!

We’ve been busy, as evidenced by the lack of entries on our blog, which we can’t thank you all enough for. But, it seems every day in conversation, we tell customers certain “features” we have or services we offer that we haven’t made public to all. This post is an attempt at describing some of those services. With that said – did you know?

1 – Personally, I love Volkswagen and Audi, as evidenced multiple times throughout our postings across various social media outlets and this blog. It doesn’t end there, however. I enjoy the service, repair, performance, maintenance, and any other aspect of other European makes also – like Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, etc… Not only that, but I employ 2 of the best local technicians that are equally proficient with all your Domestic & Asian market needs. We are happy to work on any make/model. From oil changes to tires to alignments to engine rebuilds to major engine swaps – we’ve got you covered with your automotive needs.

2 – We currently have some pretty incredible “grand opening” promotions going on. We’ve got a $25 synthetic blend oil change special, a $39 full synthetic oil change special, and $10/off all current labor rates for any/all services/repairs. These specials are good throughout the end of February (and have been in place since opening day).

3 – We offer shuttle service to and from. We also offer pickup and delivery service for your vehicle if desired. Time is everyone’s most value asset, and we value yours and will do whatever it takes to make this process as convenient as possible for you.

4 – We are an official Napa AutoCare Center. What does this mean for you? A nationwide 2 year/24,000 mile warranty on most all repairs – valid and honored at more than 17,000 AutoCare centers across the country. That also means we can offer you 6 month / 0% financing on all repairs over $199. That also means we aren’t putting cheap parts on your car. There are plenty of shoddy parts manufacturers around the world, and plenty of places to get them. Not here. We value quality far more than profit, and you’ll never receive parts or service that don’t hold up to the highest quality standards here.

5 – We have an extremely tech-friendly operating system. Prefer to handle everything through email? We got that. Would you like to be able to review all prescribed maintenance/repairs via text message? No problem. Electronic authorization by pressing a button on your tablet? No sweat. Curious of when you last had an oil change? Simply hop on our website and find your car’s complete history. We are as tech savvy as you’d like, or down home country and personable as you’d prefer. Give us a call. Shoot us a text. Send us an email. Or just stop on by. We’re always willing to listen, however you prefer to communicate.

6 – Do you like to wait around while your services are being performed? We’ve got a comfortable waiting room, plenty of free snacks and drinks, cable tv, wi-fi internet, charging for your devices, and my super friendly (and chatty) wife to keep you company.

7 – We offer a complimentary car wash with any service (weather permitting) at your discretion. We also offer a wide variety of detailing services from basic wash/vacuum up to and including that fresh off the showroom floor look.

8 – If you were familiar with the place before, you know how much work we’ve done to the office/waiting room. You probably also notice the outside area looking much cleaner and less cluttered. There is also a complete exterior makeover in the works, new landscaping, both followed shortly after by a complete renovation of the shop area. It’s a long, slow, process, but essential at the same time.

That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Thank you again for your patronage, we truly appreciate your business, and will continue to work hard to ensure you receive the best possible, personable, automotive service experience. Anything else you’d like to see us do? Any services not offered you wish we had? We’d absolutely love your input. Please call, text, email, stop by, comment below, message in a bottle, or send a carrier pigeon and give us your feedback!

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad “wow”. Quite the opposite, it’s actually a very good “wow”. I’ve always thought this was the endgame, and I’m starting to think I was right. Or maybe there’s more to come? I’ve never been one to be content with anything, always striving for the next best thing. But this. This is really good. We’re fixing cars the way they’re meant to be fixed. We’re treating our customers the way they should be treated. We’re living our dream, and we’re loving it. We aren’t getting rich, but we also aren’t starving at the same time. We’re adjusting to new lifestyles. New bills. New responsibilities. New bills. New habits. More new bills. But, at the end of every day, we’re going home happy.

You. If you’re a current client, words cannot describe our appreciation for you. You likely weren’t our client to begin with – you were Tony’s – but you stuck with us and gave us a shot. And, for that, we couldn’t be more grateful – I sincerely hope we haven’t disappointed. If you’re new, again, we can’t articulate our gratitude for you either. You’re taking a chance on us, and I hope we’re delivering in every aspect of what you consider the perfect service experience. And finally, you. You that haven’t been here yet. Well, I hope this helps give a little insight into who we are, what we believe, and what we’re trying to accomplish. We’re likely never going to be the cheapest. We might not always get you an appointment when you want. We might not even always get the job done quite as fast as you might like. But, and I promise, we will always do everything in our power to fix it right the first time. We’ll only use quality parts. We’ll always stand behind our work with an industry leading warranty. And, we’ll do whatever it takes to make you feel like you’re home and amongst friends when you’re here. When you pick your car up from Walt’s Garage, you should have the utmost confidence in any repair/service you have received. If for any reason you don’t, PLEASE reach out to us and let us know. We’ll make it right. We are only here for you, and without you, we’re nothing. We’ve got dedicated email, phone, text, and social media accounts to ensure you are always, at a minimum, 110% satisfied.

I’m not afraid to admit it, I love it. More than any human should probably. As I sit in the shop at 8pm on a Saturday evening, right as I finished cleaning up, I sit down and think to myself – “Self, why are you working until 8pm on a Saturday evening? Particularly when you aren’t even open on the weekend?”. The only answer is, I just truly love fixing Volkswagens.

You see, we woke up this morning and started making coffee at home. Today, we were going to stay home because we had spent so much time here these past few weeks getting set up. Truth be told, I can’t even remember why we stopped making coffee there and decided to drink coffee over here (keep in mind, we live 0.4 miles from the shop – we walk/bicycle over here, so it’s really just a home away from home). Regardless, we came over here, brewed a fresh pot, and just kinda breathed a bit and relaxed. We reviewed the (short) first week, what we liked and didn’t like about it, and planned different processes and such that we wanna implement. Then, at some point early in the afternoon as we were debating our plans for the day, something magical happened. A flatbed pulled into our parking lot with a Volkswagen on the back. Now, don’t take that the wrong way – we love fixing cars. All cars. That’s why we’re here, that’s what we do. But, I spent 17 professional years wrenching on nothing but those pesky German cars so I got particularly excited when I saw one coming to me. My first VW in my own shop. I hadn’t wrenched on a VW in almost 5 weeks at this point, so I definitely missed the familiarity and the crazy engineering that I’ve grown so fond of.

Karie continued talking about dinner, my mind was elsewhere. I couldn’t stop thinking about what it might be. What I might get to do. I was like a kid in a candy store, it was awesome. I waited maybe 2-3 minutes before I ran out the door to greet the driver and find out what was going on. Long story (and future blog post) short, 5 hours later, the car is 95% fixed (missing a couple parts that won’t be here until Monday) and I finally got to wrench on a VW again.

With that said – I better take my wife out to (a late) dinner before she discovers my secret love affair with a quirky German car brand and starts second guessing my sanity.

Well, we did it. We survived day one. I’m sure every technician, at some point in their career, dreams of opening their own shop. I can imagine it’s a small percentage that actually pursue it, and a way smaller percentage that actually succeeds. I also bet most (myself included) think they know everything they need to get rich and succeed with ease. Well, reality check – it’s not that easy. We felt like toddlers learning to ride a bike most of the day. Even with spending the last 2.5 weeks trying to get ready for today, we were still completely lost. Granted, we took a lot more risks than we should’ve – adopting a completely new software and processes and such that we had never used nor were familiar with, and it was evident today. But, at the end of the day, cars got fixed and customers left happy, and that’s the bottom line. No matter the struggle with bookkeeping, writing estimates/RO’s, etc…, we do know how to fix a car and effectively communicate the entire process one way or another. With that said, we do apologize if any of you had to wait extra long for a quote today. Or for your car to be written up or cashed out. Or on hold on the phone. Or maybe you received an update on a car that wasn’t yours (LOL, it happened, sorry!). Rest assured, even if we’re a bit slow up front, all the work in the back will be far beyond your expectations. The smiles and appreciation and even tears of joy we received today are appreciated far beyond words can measure, and we can’t wait to surpass your expectations again and again. Thank you for allowing us to provide a superior service for you and your vehicle, especially while we fumble through these beginning steps. If there’s ever anything we can do better, PLEASE reach out and let us know. We’re nothing without you, and we promise to never forget that.

You’re picky about your cars, we all are. We know what we like, and we know what we want. So, what do you do if the car you have isn’t exactly what you want? Or if the car you want isn’t even manufactured/imported into this country?

Now, that’s a tiny bit misleading, but let me explain. I am a TDI fanatic. Diehard. Diesel everything. I absolutely love the turbo diesel engines that Volkswagen and Audi have been using in their cars for years. I’ve owned a lot of them (more than most) as I do have a bad habit of changing cars quite frequently. But, there’s always that one car. One car made me fall in love a few years back. In 2015, I purchased an Audi A3 TDI premium plus. That car just fit me like a glove. There was almost nothing I didn’t like about it, except the transmission. No, there was nothing wrong with it, it was just missing a pedal. Sure, the DSG transmissions (dual clutch, direct shift gearbox) in these are pretty fantastic. They don’t rob power, they are quite economical, heck they’re even faster than a traditional manual transmission, but you just can’t replace the driving experience of a manual transmission. Unfortunately, when Audi introduced a completely redesigned A3 in 2015 (the 8V chassis), they eliminated the manual transmission option. Long story short, I enjoyed the car, but sold it soon thereafter and went back to a proper manual transmission equipped TDI.

Fast forward a couple years and probably 10 TDI’s later, I still couldn’t quit thinking about that A3. How much it fit me so well. The fit and finish and driving characteristics were just unparallelled in everything else I’d had since (including a pair of mk7 Golf and Golf Sportwagen TDI’s, which are essentially the exact same chassis). So, I began searching for another 8VA3. In March of 2018, I scored a deal on another. 2015, premium plus with moonroof, navigation, and S-line package. I quickly upgraded the suspension, wheels, tires, and a few other little bits and was quickly reminded why I missed that car so much. But, I was also reminded why I sold it. My left leg was quickly becoming bored. So, what to do?

I did what any other car person without a lick of sense and extra time/money on his/her hands would do. I decided to tear the DSG transmission out and build the car that Audi wouldn’t. Over the next 2 months (I hit quite a few puzzling situations on this one!), I built the only manual transmission equipped 8V Audi A3 TDI in the country, and it’d be impossible to be any happier with this car. She puts a smile on my face every time I drive her, and even delivered an impressive 56.8 average MPG (hand calculated) over the 12 hr road trip down here (averaging 74mph).

With that said – what’s your dream? I’ve accomplished countless engine swaps over the years, and numerous transmission conversions as well. If your dream is a turbo diesel VW transporter, I can build it. You wish you had a manual transmission? I can make it happen. All wheel drive 450hp mk1 rabbit? Let’s make it happen! Sometimes, it can even be cheaper to replace a tired automatic transmission with a conventional straight drive, or replace a blown or tired engine with something more modern & reliable. I love a good challenge, and take great pride in doing what others can’t/won’t/haven’t, or even just updating/refining what they did. Let’s build it.

We’ve been here exactly 16 days now. Sixteen days. It’s almost hard to believe, time is just flying by. The short and the skinny – I threw my back out hardcore with the move, to the point I had to be carried in the house at one point. Both the house and shop were not quite what we expected, or we’re just awful ambitious. Aside from a quick boat ride on Christmas and a dinner out, we’ve been working non-stop on remodeling the house, the shop, and the constant chiro appointments. But we’re almost there. Neither the shop nor the house is where we want it yet, but our grand opening is a mere 5 days away. The office and waiting room have been repainted. All new computers and computer system are in place. Parts suppliers are in place. A little bit of knowledge on how to actually run it all has been acquired. The waiting room is comfy with plenty of snacks, beverages, and TV/cable/wifi. The shop actually has a clean floor and a decent stereo system in place. Tools are clean and organized, and we are ready to fix some cars. We’ll have a permanent text-friendly phone number in place soon, with which you’ll be able to track the status of your repair, authorize work, examine photos of your work in progress, and even pay for the work if you so desire. We’re even working on a program where we can offer you a 3 year nationwide warranty on all repairs. It’s all slowly coming together, and we certainly appreciate your patience through all of this. Until then, enjoy this amazing weather we’re having and I highly recommend you take care of your back! It may be a bit optimistic, but we’re aiming to take this weekend off and refresh ourselves with a little “harbor therapy”, to be sure we’re 100% for you on opening day. Cya soon, and Happy New Year!

Of course, it was bound to happen. Three days before we hit the road to begin this new chapter in our lives, Mother Nature decided to take a 20″ dump on us. I guess we’ll take this as a final cold, and yet still beautiful, good-bye. I’m sure a few years from now we’ll look back on it, maybe even miss it, but at the same time, we’re certain we never want to experience it again! We’re very much looking forward to the Punta Gorda Christmas Boat Parade, and anticipate spending every winter the same way from then on out.

With this finality, the reality of our move is starting to settle in. We’ve still got a lot to pack, many logistics to figure out, and a whole lot of paperwork to sign before we close on the property this coming Friday. But we’re excited. We’re scared, and we’re nervous, but we’re ready for this.

As the story goes for most technicians I’d imagine, I’ve been dreaming of my own shop for over 20 years. Unlike most, however, I know this isn’t for the money. It can’t be. I’m taking a massive pay cut to pursue this dream. The truth is, I’ll never make the money I once did. It’s not about that though. It’s about the love, the passion, and personal pride. I’ve learned from every dealership and shop I’ve worked at. I’ve studied. I’ve observed. And now I believe I have the skill and experience to provide a superior service experience for YOU.

Whether you just need an oil change, or a complete service, or even a crazy huge turbo/all wheel drive/manual transmission conversion – there’s nothing we can’t handle here, and I can’t wait to start sharing it all with you come January 2nd!
